So after a month or so of recovery from the Lux trip to Europe I embarked with my close buddy and housemate in Brooklyn, Gayle, to Japan to photograph 6 cites in 12 days.
For millions of years only dramatic
shifts in terrain informed the reading
of the earth’s surface from space. Now
the cumulative light from highly
urbanized areas creates a new type of
information and understanding of the
world that reflects man’s dominance
over the planet.Three areas are visibly
brighter on a NASA map of the world
at night; The United States, Western
Europe and Japan. LUX, is a
photographic project in-progress
inspired by the disconnect between
the immense beauty produced by
man-made light and what this light
represents. The final body of work will
be made up of photographs that
document the artificial glow produced
by the 43 brightest cities from these
three areas at night. This blog follows
my travels as I photograph in these
three regions. (I have purchased Terra
Passes to counter the CO2 emissions
produced by all my travels for this
project - link below.)
